Some people right now are probably thinking, ‘Hold on. A nightmare’s when you’ve got no job, can’t pay the bills, or, worse still, find your life is in real danger by virtue of the fact that, say, you’re from the wrong tribe. Getting car insurance may be a hassle, but it’s hardly a nightmare.’
Fair point. But if you think about a nightmare as a bad dream, not as something real, then the thought of getting car insurance can seem like a nightmare. Again, some people are thinking, ‘Steady on. Getting car insurance is hardly the same as dreaming about something really bad that you believe is true because you’re not conscious.’
Okay, another fair point. But think about the moment when you wake up from a nightmare: those confused, muddled, don’t know where to start, how to make sense of anything feelings. It’s a similar set of feelings you get at the thought of having to get car insurance. ‘Aahh, getting car insurance isn’t like a nightmare then, it’s like the moment you wake up from a nightmare?’, you’re now saying to yourself.
Well, yes. Why didn’t I just say that at the beginning? Does it matter? I got there in the end. And you know what I mean, don’t you? It’s that ‘where to begin’ feeling. The hassle, the searching, the form filling, the quotes, the sales pitches, the sense that you’re sure you could get a better deal but just don’t seem to be able to find it.
So even though you reckon you aren’t getting the best deal possible, it’s such a headache, such a ‘moment you wake up from a nightmare’ scenario that you just don’t bother trying. Admit it. It’s time for renewing your car insurance, you’re not happy with the premium you’re being charged, you’ve heard friends, people at work, your parents, etc, tell you what a great deal they’ve got for their car insurance, so you decide to get a better deal for yourself. Does it work? Is the sun blue?
Sure, you’ll try a couple of options: phone calls, websites, whatever. But somehow because of one thing or another, one clause, stipulation, age range, engine size, parking ticket, whatever, what’s on offer is the same or more than the annual premium you are already paying.
It’s enough to make you cry. Like nightmares! All right, I won’t start that again. But let’s face it: the thought of getting car insurance is far from a pleasant one. That’s why most people just sign up with the same company for another year rather than shop around. It’s easier, less stressful, and besides they keep offering some bonus or discount in some apparently not too distant future.
Although lots of people drive while not insured, if you consider yourself to in any way be a decent citizen and human being, and if you know what’s best for you, you will have car insurance. Thankfully the vast majority of people do. And it’s the law. So there is no escaping car insurance, and there’s no escaping the fact that the thought of it can be … well, let’s just say, ‘less than sweet dreams!’
