Have you thought of having your own swimming pool put in your back yard. Just think of it, BBQ's, family and friends, and lots of fun because you have a pool. If you already have one, you better be thinking about insurance and how to help prevent problems.

If you have children, all of their friends will want to come over and swim all summer. Think of the fun they will have. But, are you prepared in case one of the kids gets hurt, or worse yet, drowns?

Homeowners liability insurance will help cover if someone is injured in your home, but if they are injured due to your pool, it will not cover it. In fact, if you want coverage, you have to pay a lot more money for a bigger coverage amount on liability. Let's face it, many people don't want to do that.

Yes, insurance is good to have, and yes, it is good to have enough coverage. However, no amount of coverage will replace a lost life. I hate to be morbid here, but you can't discount the possibility of someone drowning in your pool. Let's take a look at some things outside of insurance you can do to protect yourself and others.

1. Don't let anyone use your pool without your permission. How is this done? Get a fence built around it. This is highly important and a step that many homeowners don't think about.

2. Never leave the sight of any children using your pool. They should not be unsupervised, as they may or may not have a lot of swimming experience, and if the children are small, they can drown in just a small amount of water. Don't rely on an older sibling to watch them. You are responsible.

3. There should be no alcohol allowed near the pool area, and you should not let anyone who has been drinking to use the pool. This is just common sense.

4. Don't swim if you have been sick or are on some kind of medication that impairs your ability to stay awake or drive.

Just as purchasing anything fun and big for your home is something that many people want to do, it is also something that should be taken seriously. Talk to your insurance agent and find out what kind of coverage you need and then take the proper precautions.
