Mother's Day got its start as a war protest when Julia Ward Howe established a "Mother's Day for Peace" on June 2, 1872. Her intent was to celebrate the peaceful contributions of mothers and to draw attention to the cause of suffragists. Her proclamation defined the holiday until early in the 20th century - about the same time that the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote.
Ann Reeves Jarvis was another woman who made significant contributions to society through organizing women to improve conditions in their communities. Her daughter Anna campaigned for a national holiday honoring mothers after she passed away. Woodrow Wilson approved the holiday in 1914, and since then has been celebrated annually every second Sunday of May.
By 1923 Jarvis had begun to protest the manner in which Mothers Day was being celebrated. The result of to her desire to sentimentalize motherhood was the start of the gift giving that is now associated with Mothers Day. People started to send flowers and cards to their mothers. Jarvis spent the rest of her life fighting against the commercialization of the holiday. Ironically, she never had any children and she spent the end of her life in a sanitarium, surrounded each year by Mothers Day gifts, flowers, and cards.
Many people celebrate Mother's Day by spending time with their mothers. For those who live too far away to visit, it is customary to send flowers or cards. Some people choose to send their mother her favorite variety of flower while others choose flowers that hold a more personal and special meaning to her.
Mother's Day is a time to recognize all the special things that moms do for their children. Children will usually pick out special presents for their mothers. Often the fathers are enlisted to help choose the gifts, which range from flowers to jewelry to clothing.
Jarvis may not have intended the Mother's Day holiday to be filled with gift giving and special parties. She had wished for a special day be made to honor mothers. With that intention, she was very successful, as people all over the world give admiration to their moms.
