Whether you're looking for peace or adventure, Mallorca is the perfect place for a holiday. It's ancient and it's modern, it's tranquil and it's exciting, it's got mountains, it's got sea, it's got great food and great shops - there's something for everyone in Mallorca. I've been there in spring, summer and autumn and loved it every time.
Mallorca is best known by many as a magnet for British people seeking sun, sand, cheap booze and wild nightlife. If this is what you want, you can certainly find it, particularly in Magaluf and Palmanova, where it's high-rise hotels, discos and chips with everything. These are great resorts for stag and hen parties and hedonistic twenty-somethings who want to let their hair down. If this is your idea of hell, however, don't be put off! Mallorca has so much more to offer than this.
If a sandy beach is a essential to your holiday fun, you'll find some stunning ones in Mallorca. Puerto Pollensa has a long, peaceful beach, running more or less around the whole bay. It's comfortable for sunbathing and convenient for shops and restaurants, which are just across the road - and the sea there is wonderful for swimming in. The mountains behind the town are also interesting to explore.
If you like nature, there's a lot to see in Mallorca. The landscape itself is pretty amazing and there are some amazing caves and underground lakes, which are now tourist attractions. The flora and fauna are also quite special, and the island has several nature reserves and natural parks. Worth seeing also are the underground caves and lakes on the east coast.
If you enjoy being active, there is tons for you to do. In and on the water, for example, you can sail, ski, dive, paraglide and snorkel. On land, you can, amongst other things, walk, bicycle, ride a horse, play golf and play tennis.
The history in Mallorca is phenomenal. The Roman influence is still very much in evidence, as is the Gothic and the Islamic. You can see it in the architecture, the city walls, the town planning - and in the archaeological remains. If you want to learn more, you can do so in the many excellent museums.
There is a great deal of art in Mallorca, with a number of marvellous galleries in Palma and many other smaller ones across the island. Well known artists exhibit alongside those just starting out and there are some gems to be found. If you like music, check out some of the outdoor concerts held in beautiful locations throughout the summer.
Even if you're not very adventurous with food, do try some traditional Mallorcan specialities. The locally reared pork and the seafood are delicious but don't worry if you're non-carnivorous because the vegetables, the fruit and the sweet-dough ensaimadas are equally delicious. Don't just settle for what you would have at home; push your culinary boundaries a bit and I believe you'll be glad you did.
From pretty well wherever you are in the UK, you can find a cheap flight to Mallorca. Accommodation is generally good value and so is car hire, so a Balearic holiday is not going to break the bank. And, with so many diverse things to see and do there, one trip may not be enough.
