It might be difficult to keep count of how many times a day the average size family will open the refrigerator. It can be when meals are being prepared or just when someone wants a snack. When kids are getting what they want and sometimes putting things back in, it can become a pretty messy place to store food even though that is exactly what it is for. When it is hard to get kids to keep their rooms clean, you can bet there not going to take very much care with keeping the refrigerator clean.

With all of those grubby little hands going and coming everyday, leftovers being put in and taken out, and occasional spills and splatters, the fridge can get really nasty inside and out. It can be a chore to try and keep it clean at all times, but it should be done at least once a week to keep down germs and bacteria and to keep it from taking forever to get done after you have let it go for a few weeks.

Keeping the refrigerator clean can be easier than you might have thought if you just make a habit of certain things even when you have kids. It is not good to leave leftover items in the fridge so long that they get moldy. Mold is extremely unhealthy and it can spread to other items in the refrigerator too if they are uncovered. Rule number one is to not put uncovered leftovers in there to begin with. This will keep the food from drying out and help keep odors down.

Odors can be better controlled by putting an open box of baking soda in there. Make a point to clean leftovers out on a regular basis. If you choose a certain day of the week to inspect for items that need to be thrown out, it will keep it from becoming overcrowded and keep anyone from eating anything that has gone bad.

Many people will try to do all their grocery shopping once a week. Before you do your weekly shopping is a great time to clean out the refrigerator. This means leftovers and also checking the expiration dates on bottles and other containers. Once you have done this, use a disinfecting cleaner to wipe down all the inside and outside. If the storage drawers or racks are dirty, go ahead and take them out and clean them while the refrigerator is closest to empty. It is much better to get rid of the old stuff before you put in the new stuff and it will be clean and ready when you return from the grocery store.
