The cocktail shaker is a bar accessory that has been around for a very long time, in one form or another, and it continues to be a very popular item at just about every bar you go to. There are many different styles that a cocktail shaker can come in, but almost all of them can be categorized into two different groups: Boston and Traditional. These types of cocktail shakers can be found at your local busy bar or even at your neighbors house next door.
A Traditional shaker is typically made with metal and has a tight fitted top that locks into place on it. This cocktail shaker often has a strainer under the lid as well for when you are using ice to chill a beverage, but do not want to serve it over ice. The Boston style shaker is one that has two different pieces to it. This shaker consists of a metal bottom and either a glass or plastic mixing bowl. Typically, when you use this type of mixer a separate strainer is needed if crushed ice is used in making the drink. The Boston style shaker is one that is usually only used by professional bartenders.
When shakers first came about in the early 1930s, they were much larger than the ones that we commonly use today. Back then they were making shakers out of stainless steel which was making its own fashion statement at the time. All of them usually had a part that was a strainer which was built with a drip free spout to separate the ice from the mixture as well as to limit the amount of spilling that took place.
The type of cocktail shaker that you use should be directly related to what you plan on using it for. If you are an experienced bartender then you can most likely have your pick of any type of shaker, but if you are a novice, then you want to be more careful when choosing the appropriate shaker. If you are not very experienced with using a cocktail shaker, but want to entertain some friends with martinis then you want to use one that is all in one piece with a strainer built into it; this will allow you to easily mix it up and filter the mixture from the ice. Cocktail shakers are very popular and they are sure to raise the level of fun at your next get together or night out on the town.
