A straight flush is a poker hand that has five cards in numerical sequence all of the same suit ?hearts, diamonds, clubs or spades. A royal flush is one that contains the following sequence of cards: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and ten. It is the highest hand in any poker game and cannot be beaten. When you do have a flush other than the royal flush, the highest card determines the ranking. If two players have straight flushes, then the one with the highest cards is the winner. The suits do not play any part in determining which player has the better hand.

You can also have a straight, which is five cards in numerical sequence but not all the cards are of the same suit. The same rules apply in determining which of two straights is the better hand. For example, if a player has the following hand ?ten of diamonds, nine of clubs, eight of spades, seven of hearts and six of diamonds, this straight will beat another player hand of Ace of hearts, two of clubs, three of clubs, four of spades and five of diamonds. The Ace in this case is the lowest card, rather than the highest. Cards cannot be of both high and low denominations to count as a straight. For example, there is no such hand as King, Ace, two, three and four. Such a hand would have the lowest poker ranking of Ace high.

In order to fully understand how to determine whether or not you have a winning hand in poker or the possibility of obtaining one, it is important to know the rankings of the hands. As previously described a flush is the top hand and the ones that follow in order are:

- Four of a kind. As the name indicates, this refers to four cards of the same denomination in each of the four suits. It doesn make any difference what the fifth card is.

- Full House. In this hand, you have three cards of one denomination in three of the suits and two cards of another denomination. An example of a full house is three fives and two fours.

- Straight. The straight with cards in numerical sequence of different suits falls into this ranking.

- Three of a Kind. Like the four of a kind hand, you have three cards of the same denomination from three suits. Again, the other two cards you hold do not make any difference.

- Two Pair. Two pairs of cards such as two Aces and two sixes.

- Pair. This is one pair of cards.

- High Card. When none of the players have either of the hands listed above, the winner is determined by which one has the highest card.

When playing any game of poker, an Ace can be either then highest or lowest card. Although there is no ranking of suits in poker, there are variations in Italian poker where the suits are ranked as hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades with hearts being the highest and spades being the lowest.
