As you learn how to play poker, you will hear many different terms that you haven heard before. Poker players use jargon to describe some of the hands that they have when they are hoping for the right card to turn up to give them a winning hand. One of these terms is gutshot. It is also known as a belly buster. This refers to an inside straight draw when you have four of the five cards needed to give you a straight. You hope that the next card the dealer turns over is the one you want to make the straight.
An inside straight draw has four possible outs. An out is the unseen card that a player needs to make a hand. If you have the following cards in your hand ?9,8,7,6 ?you need a 5 to turn up. You can have the five in any suit, which means you have four outs or four possible cards that could help you form a straight. It is when a hand has only four possible outs that it is called an inside straight draw. In contrast, an outside straight draw is more open-ended. This is because you need two cards to make a straight, giving you more outs. This means that there are eight possible outs. An example of such a hand would be ?, 9,8.7 ?. In this case you need a ten and a six in any suit to show up.
It is a trying time for a player when he/she has a belly buster or inside draw hand because this means there is no chance of folding after the flop. The flop is when the player will realize that two cards along with what he/she holds make part of a straight and there are still two more cards to come that just may be the one needed. The player has to keep going on the off chance that the one card will be the one the dealer turns over.
There are several different types of draws you can have when playing poker in addition to the inside and outside straight draw. In a flush draw, for example, you could have four cards of the same suit and only need one more card of that suit. In this case there are many outs because any card of that suit will give you a possible winning hand. Since you never know what your opponents have, you may or may not be a winner but you have to stay in the game.
You can also have a double inside straight draw or a double belly buster with a hand such as 9, ?, 7, 6, 5, ? 3. In this case you have eight possible outs because if the dealer turns over an 8 or a 4 you will have a straight. This type of hand is really a nail biter because it will go to the river card before you know whether or not you have a straight. When such a hand occurs, this is the time when players get really nervous and you see them stand up to watch the dealer turn over the River card.
