In poker you can rely solely on luck in order to win. This means that to become a successful player you have to develop a repertoire of strategies, which change according to the rules of the game and the level of experience of your opponents. You have to start using your strategies as soon as you receive your cards from the dealer. This is the reason you need to develop a solid pre flop Texas Hold em strategy. There are several factors that you need to consider in such a strategy, which include:
- The number of players at the table
- The aggressiveness of your opponents
- How much money you have left
- How much risk you are willing to take
- Your position at the table
When you are playing a large table your odds of getting the cards you need to make a hand are smaller and there is an increased chance that another player will have a stronger hand than you.
If your stack of chips is getting lower, you will have to start playing a tighter game. This means to only go into a hand when you have a winning combination that will likely hit on the cards in the flop. You do have to keep a watchful eye on the players that are staying in the hand and those that are folding. Some of the players remaining may have been bluffing for the past few hands, so there is always a chance that they are bluffing on this hand as well. You can also take the risk of bluffing, if you haven done so previously in the game. If other players notice that you only stay in the hand when you have good cards, this will lead them to believe that you have a strong hand this time as well.
An important strategy in playing Texas Hold-Em is knowing when to bet. This is part of the pre flop strategy. When you find yourself the only player remaining in the hand with the players who paid the blinds, raising the bet is called blind stealing. If you simply called the hands, the blinds will not raise and will only check. If you raise the bet, there is a good chance that the blinds will fold at this point if they do not have good cards.
When you are the last player to bet, you can use a strategy to limit the number of players in the hand by using a steal raise strategy. This is a strategy you should use sparingly because your opponents will catch on quite quickly. When you have a good drawing hand this is a good strategy to use when you hope to win the pot when the dealer turns over one or more of your outs.
Each hand will change your position at the table in respect to the dealer. The later you are in making a bet, the better chance you have of watching the other players and trying to read their expressions and gestures to determine whether or not you think they have a winning hand.
