Poker is one of the most loved games in gambling today. From a simple game of stud to the illustrious game of Texas Hold'em, poker has become so popular that it warrants its own television shows. People across the country log on to their computers nightly to get their poker fix whenever they have time to play.

People might ask how the game of poker became such a beloved game throughout the nation. The fact that the people who play it could lose every cent they have ever earned makes people think it would be a deterrent. It is not, as this is the aspect of the game that makes people love it so.

Being a game of chance, where it is almost entirely dependent on the deck of cards, is an aphrodisiac to most people. The loss of control over their environment and their security is something most professional people crave. Most professional business people have such control over every facet of their lives that a little game of chance gives them a form of release.

The fact that poker has not only a special language to learn but also special social skills that need to be appreciated is another part of the control issue. Almost as important to the player as the special, personal rules of the game are knowing what hands to play and being able to bluff. If they cannot follow these social guidelines, a player will not be invited back.

In a game of poker, even the most skilled player still relies on the order of the cards being drawn. Winning still depends on the order of the cards no matter how long they have player or how well they can read their opponents. Poker players must make a winning hand from the cards they are dealt unlike in blackjack where the player can control whether they receive more cards or not.

There are other attractive parts to poker than the lack of control. The chance to win a very large sum of money, like in Texas Hold'em, is why so many people start playing poker. The total amount of money that every player starts the game with is what a Texas Hold'em player stands to win.

This large amount is usually what drives people to play. In the case of Chris Moneymaker, the first winner of the Texas Hold'em Tournament in 2003, the chance of winning brought him a million dollars. Since then many people have tried to place themselves in that same position through online competition.

Dependent on how well you can play and how many people come and go from your table as you are playing is the amount won in regular poker games. You have a great chance of winning all your opponents' money if you can bluff them into thinking that your hands are better than they truly are. The chances of quite a few novices sitting at your table are greater if you can keep the same position at a table in a casino for a long time.

Poker also has another feature that draws people to it; companionship. Many people who have busy lives set up private poker games with their friends just to be able to spend some time together. These people usually take turns hosting the event and playing the position of dealer.

People who play at private home games are not the only ones who have made friends through the game. Because of the competition, many professional poker players at the Texas Hold'em tournaments have become close friends. People have made friends from other states, countries and time zones by playing poker online.

Poker will last throughout the ages because of these fundamentals of the game. It has become the game it is today because of the truly attractive elements of camaraderie, money, and the sport of the game. These are the reasons people love poker.
