There are not many people that do not enjoy recreation on the water during the warm weather. There are many who enjoy the water when it is in the form of snow or ice when it is freezing cold outside. There are always incidents in the cold or warm weather when water recreation turns deadly because people forget to use the caution that they should while they are having fun.

Drowning or near drowning is an accident that can happen when people are swimming, boating, water skiing, or jet skiing. There are three things that most commonly cause drowning or near fatal accidents while doing these things. Small children are not supervised adequately or wearing the proper floatation devices. Parents often buy the wrong size life jackets for a child or fail to make them wear one at all. This is an essential precaution that needs to be taken in water that is over the head of a child even when they know how to swim.

Consuming alcohol is another thing that causes unnecessary accidents. People seem to have a hard time realizing how dangerous it is to combine alcohol and water recreation. Consuming alcohol impairs not only your judgment, but your physical reactions as well. It is never a good idea to drink alcohol if you are out on the water. Many deaths and accidents could be prevented if people just would not drink while performing these activities. When boats or jet skis are involved, they are endangering not only themselves, but others around them as well.

Trying to be a dare devil is one more mistake that people make, especially teens and young kids who want to show off. What is meant to be a harmless stunt can turn out to be far more dangerous than they realize. Diving from unsafe places at unsafe heights is often a tragedy that is avoidable. When people drive too fast or drive recklessly while operating a boat or jet ski is dangerous for them and anyone else on the water.

It should be obvious why people get injured while ice skating. It is extremely slippery and falling down is common, but people love to give it a try anyway. This is one activity where you should really take it slow until you have had a little practice.

For anyone who loves to snow ski or use a snow mobile, they should know to never go out alone. Winter weather can be unpredictable and if you have an accident alone, it can easily be life threatening. You should always stay on designated trails and even groups out together should make sure someone else knows where they will be and when to expect everyone back. Have a cell phone or a location device in case you get lost or an accident happens where you are not capable of getting back on your own. Have necessary supplies along as well just in case.
