Many home owners love the idea of having a pool to add that certain touch of glamour and fun to their residence. On a hot summer day there is nothing better than taking a swim in your own swimming pool and then relaxing at the water side with a long cool drink. People who have children know how much fun it can be for kids to play the day away in their backyard pool. Swimming pools are great for entertaining friends and are the perfect partner for those warm weather cookouts.

However much fun home swimming pools can be, whether they are above ground or in ground, they are a big responsibility to not only take care of and maintain, but also a bigger responsibility for home owners is making sure they are safe. One aspect of pool safety entails making sure the water is clean and treated correctly so it is safe to swim in. Too much of the wrong chemical can be hazardous to eyes and skin, too little chemicals can make it unhealthy as well because of germs and bacteria. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully for any and all chemicals you must use in your pool.

Swimming pools are always a danger to small children that do not know how to swim. Be sure that if you have small children or even neighboring children that your pool is fenced in properly, gated, and locked when you can not be present to supervise swimming. Accidental pool drowning happens every year and the majority of them are completely avoidable. It is your responsibility as the homeowner to make sure your pool is safely enclosed.

Pool accidents and drowning still happens even when everyone in the pool can swim. These accidents and drowning usually take place when there is rough play involved or because some one drank too much alcohol. Alcohol and swimming pools combined can be dangerous. Make sure you and your guests drink responsibly when using the pool.

As a swimming pool owner it is also a very wise idea to know how to perform CPR on a drowning or injured victim if an accident should occur. It is important to get the person out of the water as quickly as possible. Every minute can count and if you are prepared by knowing exactly what to do next you could very well save a life.
