There is a device that has been developed primarily by dentists that is elegant in its simplicity, yet extraordinary in usefulness as it relates to winning the battle of the bedroom: a snoring mouthpiece. Fitted to the upper and lower arch (teeth), the effect of this snoring mouthpiece is to pull the mandible (lower jaw) forward so as to reduce snoring. When snoring is eliminated, all parties in the bedroom get a better night's sleep. This is monumental because sleep is so important to our health.
Quality sleep not only heals us, but gives us back control of our lives. Alternatively, proper sleep improves our lives to the extent that we feel good about ourselves and life in general. We don't suffer from daytime listlessness, and we have energy.
Sleep scientist tell us that there are some eighty disorders that get in the way of sleep. Snoring may be the most prevalent of these despite the fact that people who snore will often tell you they sleep well. On the other hand they sheepishly admit it bothers their bedmate. While they're correct about acknowledging they disturb the sleep of their spouse, they are dead wrong about snoring's effects on themselves. This thinking is totally incorrect. Snoring acts to arouse everyone in the bedroom from deep sleep and this includes the snorer him/herself. We'll find out a little later why a snoring mouthpiece may provide relief.
Whether the deterrent to good sleep is snoring, insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome or anything else is irrelevant. Poor sleep has a profoundly negative impact on your quality of life.
Let's discuss this. The most common complaint from people who snore is that they suffer from daytime fatigue. When they are sedentary, these people who are sleep deprived have trouble staying awake, i.e., sitting at their desk, reading in an easy chair, driving. This can be particularly lethal if they are driving. Falling asleep at the wheel is hugely dangerous. Here's how pervasive this problem is: almost 40% of American adults complain that their daytime fatigue interferes with their daily activities. And almost every one of these poor folks will also tell you that they have no energy, period. They literally feel sick. Bearing this in mind, a snoring mouthpiece makes common sense, does it not?
Remember the movie "Grumpy Old Men"? Why are old men (and women) grumpy? Believe it or not, "grumpy old men" (or women for that matter) may not be irritable because their nerves are frayed from fighting life's day-in and day-out battles. They're grumpy or irritable because older people, on average, don't sleep as well as younger people. Unless, of course, they find a snoring mouthpiece which is an oral appliance that can open up the airway.
More About Snoring
Air reaches your lungs when you breathe by traveling from either the nostrils or the mouth through an opening at the back of the throat called the airway and on down. If you were to examine the back of the throat you would notice soft tissues called the soft palate and uvula in the rear, upper 1/3 of the oral cavity. These soft tissues are the culprit in snoring because as we fall asleep, these tissues relax and fall back into the airway. This makes the airway smaller.. In order to inhale and exhale during the breathing process, air must be under more pressure since the opening is smaller (like a pressure wash on your hose). The breath stream which is now under pressure passes over the relaxed tissues of the throat and sets these floppy tissues into vibration. Thus we see the nightly birth of snoring. Medical science has worked hard for years to come up with snoring solutions everything from complicated surgeries to sprays. They have not been very successful so far. The idea behind a snoring mouthpiece is that it adjusts the position of soft tissues in the throat and prevents them from totally collapsing. With an open airway, snoring goes away. The snoring mouthpiece appears to be a very promising technology to stop snoring.
