There are all sorts of things which cause you to be awake through the night. For example, there are many physical factors such as the time you get up in the morning and the time you go to sleep at night along with what time you eat before you retire, which can all affect your sleep patterns. Even taking a look at the mood you are in before going to bed or what is running through your mind may help you to discover exactly what is causing your insomnia.

It is important to understand the root cause so you can find a cure for insomnia. Sometimes the reason behind what causes insomnia is a medical condition.

Physical Causes

Is your bedroom a haven of relaxation? Or is it merely an annex of your workplace? If you answered yes to the latter question, then it just might be your surroundings which are contributing to your insomnia. It's important that your bedroom be peaceful and calming.

If your bedroom is not in any way an inviting place, then there are things you need to do to make it so. Make it cozy and this will help to sort out your sleeplessness. It's a good idea to invest in blinds or heavier curtains to make sure your room is dark. This usually helps to prevent insomnia.

How much coffee do you drink in the daytime? More than one or two cups are sure to contribute to your insomnia. In fact, overdoing it with caffeine and alcohol is one of the major causes of insomnia.

How's Your Health?

What causes insomnia might be more sinister than too many cups of coffee. You might have a medical condition that is keeping you awake. If you have recently been diagnosed with a medical condition then this could be the answer to why you are staying up all night.

The bad news and your awareness of the problem might keep you anxious and awake when you should be sleeping. Heart disease, hypertension, and Parkinson's are just a few of the diseases which contribute to insomnia.

If you think there's a possibility that you might have any of these diseases then you should make an appointment with your physician to find out for sure, especially if you've made unsuccessful efforts to unwind before bed in calm and peaceful surroundings.

Insomnia often seems like something trivial but it might hide a more serious medical condition that has gone undiagnosed.
