Having granite countertops installed in your kitchen and bathroom can add a decent bit of value to the space and it is becoming much more accessible to the average buyer as long as they have enough money to purchase it with.

It is not as expensive as it used to be, but it is still restricted mostly to the middle class. There are a few things that you should know before you go shopping for granite so you know whether it is the right material for you and your home.

Not all neighborhoods warrant the purchase of granite for countertops, so you want to make sure if you are renovating a home for sale that you do not go above and beyond the call of duty anywhere in the house and make sure the renovations are appropriate for the area.

You can actually lose money by adding expensive features to a home in an undesirable neighborhood and you will likely not be able to get your desired asking price.

As for the expense of granite, 90 square feet of it will cost over $10,000 and this is the average amount of countertop space. Factor more or less money than this into your budget to make sure you can afford this material for your home.

You should remember that granite is a naturally occurring material and it is porous. It will absorb liquids and food colors easily if it is not sealed correctly and at least once a year, if not twice.

They require cleaning every day and you should not allow foods that stain surfaces easily like red wine be spilled on them and left there.

Go shopping for granite at least two or three different stores and get a quote on both the slab you want and the labor required to cut it and install it. Some stores will offer remnant pieces if you ask about them and they sometimes will give them to you and charge you only for the labor necessary to get them installed if you are lucky.

Whatever you do, do not purchase granite or any other natural stone online, since you may not be getting what you are purchasing.

The only thing about granite and other natural stone is the pattern and color you want for your home may not be readily available, especially if you want to try and purchase a remnant piece. If you cannot find the right piece of granite, consider other natural or engineered stones.
