Moving house with not much else

I’m moving house for the first time next week and I can barely control my excitement. I can not wait to get out of my soulless London city flat and into my gorgeous new country house. There’s only one problem that I hadn’t accounted for and that’s the small (or large depending on how you put it) issue of the furniture.

When I moved to the flat - fashionably now known as an ‘apartment’ on the letting brochure - all the furniture came with it as an extra. This was probably because it was the show flat on the 13th floor and getting anything up or down the stairs would’ve been a tiresome task for anyone who wasn’t then completely put off buying it.

So now you see, I have no furniture to move in with.

I refuse to end up sitting on cardboard boxes for the next few months whilst I am forced to entertain guests on beanbags and rugs. I need to get some new furniture sharpish which leaves me less time to browse than I would normally like. I would mosey on down to that well known sofa shop if those guitar playing lunatics on the advert didn’t annoy me so much, as it is I can’t bear to set foot in the place without hearing air guitar classics somewhere in the back of my head.

I want simple, rustic, classic pieces of furniture for my new home. I definitely need new dining table and chairs, something that looks sturdy yet elegant with a good height and width. I also need sofas for my cosy living room and at least one poof.

It’s always been my dream to move to the country as the country is where I grew up and it’s the place where I feel the safest. I can’t wait to open my door in the morning to be greeted by fresh air and twittering birds instead of the sound of traffic and the smell of exhaust fumes. Sure I am going to miss the hustle and bustle of the city but I think the plusses far outweigh the minuses.

Anyway back to furniture…

I can’t quite decide whether or not to have plain smart wooden seating around the dining table or if I should opt for the leather covered option. I think the light wood would look much better next to my red Aga but on the other hand, I do like a bit of padding on the underside when I sit down.

Goodness, I can’t believe how excited I’m getting about interior design. I’ve never been all that interested in it before yet now I find myself sat on my (the apartment’s) sofa surrounded by country living magazines. If my mum could see me now she’d die laughing, it was only six years ago that I was languishing in a student house in a room decorated with bits of mouldy pizza. Mmm nice, how things have changed.
