Mike and Harold are best friends. They have sons who play little league baseball for two opposing teams with in their city. They have always enjoyed watching their sons play the games. Win or loose they were just glad to see them enjoying their childhood. The championship games were always their favorite.

They got to sit in the stands and watch the competition. The championship game was the mammoth competition between the best 2 teams. This year it was going to be special. It was between Mike and Harold sons team. They thought it was great, because they could trash talk all the way up to the game and there were bragging rights for the team that won.

They flipped a coin to see what side they were going to sit on. They always sat together. The game started, and right away Mike hated the way the umpire was calling the game. The umpire was from out of town. He had no real interest in either team. Mike became very angry when the umpire call an out. He felt it would probably cost the game.

The last inning came up. Mikes sons team needed a run to tie. As fate would have Mikes son was the batter. Mike was so excited that he sat on the edge of his seat. The pitch was thrown and the umpire called it a strike. The second pitch was thrown and the umpire called another strike. By this time Mike was boiling.

He wondered what the umpire was looking at. He thought, man those were clearly balls. The last pitch was thrown, Mikes son did not swing and the umpire called a strike three. Mike believed it was another ball. He knew they had lost. He bolted from the stands and headed straight for the umpire. He punched the umpire who had removed his protective gear and knocked him to the ground.

Some other parents tried to convince Mike to back off, but he kept coming. They finally had to call the police. They arrested Mike for assault. The umpire suffered some bruises. The case against Mike is still pending. Mikes son was the real looser in all this having to watch his dad involved in all that violence.

Sometimes fans can not control their anger. They forget the purpose of the sports. Children learn a lot by watching their parents. They see how their parents solve problems and act in a similar manner. If the parents become violent then the children are likely to be violent. You must have a plan to defend yourself if you are approached with violence during a sporting event.

Game officials, players and other parents are the subject of many demeaning acts including violence. While sports are meant to teach teamwork and comradary, they some times bring out the worst in people. A night out at the game has landed many a fan in jail overnight and in many cases much longer.

The damage done by such incidents goes way beyond just the display of stupidity. It impacts the game and the reputation of the perpetrators for a long time. The next time you are setting in a sporting event decide what you will do if things get out of control.
