A diaper cake is a unique, wonderful and perfect baby gift for any baby shower! Perhaps you have been given a diaper cake, you saw one given at a baby shower, or you just know what they are! Regardless, diaper cakes are a wonderful choice for a baby shower, because they give a gift that can definitely be used: diapers!

Now, you can purchase an already assembled diaper cake, but if you'd rather not pay as much as a hundred dollars or more for twenty dollars worth of diapers and ten dollars worth of gauze and ribbon, you can buy those materials on your own and assemble your own diaper cake.

To get started, do the top of the diaper cake first. To do this, start by rolling up a diaper, starting with the open end, Once the first diaper is rolled up, wrap a rubber band around it. Next, add seven more diapers to the rubber band. Now it's time to work on the middle layer. Repeat the first step, and use a bigger rubber band to add fifteen to twenty more diapers. For the base, you'll need a very large rubber band and thirty to forty diapers.

Now that you know how big the diaper cake is going to be, cut out a circular base from a sturdy piece of cardboard. If you can't use cardboard, pick out a dinner tray or piece of plastic, or even a pizza pan. Whatever material you choose to use, make sure it is the same circumference as the base of the diaper cake. The largest layer of the diaper cake goes onto the base.

Now, remove one or two diapers from the bottom layer and replace those removed diapers with a gift, such as a coupon, an outfit, or a tiny toy. Add bottles of baby lotion, oil, powder and shampoo in the center of the diaper cake for stability.

Assemble the two remaining tiers in the same manner, being sure to remove diapers and adding gifts. Secure the tiers to one another using wooden dowels through the base layer. Finally, use decorative ribbon and bows to tie off the diaper cake. Add transparent gauze in pink, blue, yellow, white or purple as a finishing touch, and as a way to easily transport your newly made diaper cake. The mother-to-be who is receiving your diaper cake is sure to love it!
