It's not actually that difficult to install an alarm system by yourself, it is nothing more than a simple do it yourself job, it can even be completed in a weekend. First you should start by deciding on the type of alarm system that you want to fit. You may need to seek advice for this, as which type you choose will depend on the functions you require.
Most homeowners simply want an alarm that prevents people breaking into their house. Most alarms work as deterrents, while a few will try to catch the burglars when they try to break into your house. You can use a silent alarm for the purpose of catching the bad guys; however they won't scare people off.
If a burglar is in your house while you are there then there is always a chance you will meet them while you are waiting for the police to come. Most people want to have an alarm with a very loud siren which is triggered as soon as the burglar enters the house. This will hopefully frighten and scare off the burglar without the risk of a confrontation. Most times the criminal will leave the house immediately as soon as the alarm is sounded.

Some burglars are so determined that they will get into the house no matter what security system you put in place, these security systems will only normally frighten off opportunistic thieves.
When you are fitting a wired security system you must make sure that you hide all of the wiring, especially from the outside of the house. Most home alarm systems will notify the police of a break in using your phone line, this is only useful if you make sure the phone line cannot be cut from outside of the house. If the phone line has been cut then it's pretty much useless.
The first type of alarm that you should consider using is a perimeter home security system. However these can create ways in if one of the sensors fails. You can use infrared motion sensors inside the house, however if you've got a pet then these will be prone to false alarms. You should think about your individual situation when designing and installing your own alarm.
