There are several brands of reverse osmosis filters on the market today. Names such as Culligan, GE, AquaPure, Amway, and many more sell the filters for the reverse osmosis systems. So how do you know which is the best one to use? The system you purchase usually recommends a brand to use. This may or may not mean that you have to use that particular one. Many times systems are built basically the same and some brands are interchangeable.

Reverse osmosis is the process of removing contaminants from the water we use. The water is pushed through a membrane that has holes so small that they are not visible to the human eye without the use of a microscope. This allows only the water to go through and keeps contaminants such as bacteria, solids, and germs from entering the water supply.

One of the disadvantages of using reverse osmosis is the waste of the water. For every gallon of water that is cleaned, there are gallons that are wasted. Many people believe that you can use the wasted water for plants, but the fact is the Ph balance would be quite high and might do more harm than good.

These systems also require electricity and this can cause your bill to be quite high. Another thing most people do not realize is reverse osmosis does not disinfect the water that you get. So if there are contaminants in it that are bad for your health, they may still be there when it gets to your glass.

GE water filters use a spiral type filter that is in a tube. Because the GE filters traps up to 99.8% salt, according to the World Health Organization, the water is not the right quality for consumption for humans or animals or for cooking. The minerals that it strips from the water are also good minerals that people need. This is another reason drinking this water is not recommended.

Your plumbing suffers from the reverse osmosis water. The lack of minerals makes it harder on pipes. There must be a storage unit for the water that has been treated. This unit must be cleaned regularly or it is a breeding ground for bacteria. Disinfectants must be used constantly. The membranes that are used will have to be replaced and they are rather costly.

Therefore, GE water filters may not be the best ones to use when it comes to reverse osmosis for your water cleaning needs. The opinion differs on whether this type of system is healthy. Some say the removal of certain minerals is not good for water that humans consume. Others say the contaminants that are removed from the water are harmful. The best way to find out would be to have your water tested and see exactly what is in it before making a major purchase such as a reverse osmosis system.
