Keep in mind these next few tips when you're designing a web site.
Upper Left Corner
Place your logo on the upper left hand corner because for most people, they read from left to right, from top to bottom. Naturally, we've been conditioned to look at this spot the most.
In fact, this is why most computer applications have the File command there; because it's the most important command. The same applies with your website - place the most important thing, your logo, on the upper left hand corner.
Easy Links
Another web design tip is to make your links bigger. This means making your links consist of more than one word and making your cascading menu options farther apart from each other.
More Above The Fold
Regarding newspapers, above the fold refers to the stories that are above the crease the newspapers make so they will fit in newspaper vending machines. The story above the fold is what gets a person's attention while walking down the street.
The same applies to web design, only above the fold means the portion of the screen that the user can see without scrolling. Our third web design tip is to put the more valuable information above the web design fold because it gets seen more often than information below it.
Choose Layout Before Interface
Because the homepage is the most important page, you should have several options to choose from regarding layout and graphics. Make several graphic designs and put them in a powerpoint slide. This will make it easier for your client to browse through and choose from.
Worry about the interface after having chosen a graphics layout/theme.
