If you work in a lab, whether industrial, medical, educational, or in any other field, you are part of the lengthy history of chemistry. While many consider the history of their work really beginning with the chemistry revolution in the 1700s, that is actually not true. Chemistry has been improving life for humans in one way or another for a remarkable 10,000 years!
Appropriately, one of the first chemical processes stumbled upon by humans was fermentation, a biochemical process in which substances are broken down by microorganisms. This process gifted the world with beer and wine, and has been practiced by both laymen and master brewers throughout the rest of human history.
While the essential nature of beer and wine to human advancement may be argued, other chemical processes are not. 8,000 years ago copper was being smelted in the Middle East, giving people a malleable material from which to make practical objects as well as art. 7,000 years ago, Mesopotamians used chemistry to develop tanning so that long lasting leather shoes and garments could be made. 4,500 years ago the Egyptians used fusion to make glass. And stuffed crust pizza lovers should give credit to the brilliant herdsman or homemaker who 3,000 years ago discovered how enzymes converted milk into cheese.
For thousands of years then, inquisitive chemists have never stopped using this science to make life on this planet a little better. Modern chemists are doing the groundwork for all sorts of future advances. Whether it is curing diabetes or cystic fibrosis, developing a more gorgeous hair color, finding workable alternative fuels, or even trying to make life off of this planet a real possibility, the men and women manning today's laboratories have a kinship with their curious brothers and sisters from all those centuries ago.
When so much is dependent upon accurate work being done in laboratories, it pays to do things to the best of your abilities. Part of this involves the skills of the staff, but to keep your laboratory running at top form, you should also make sure your laboratory supplies are of the best quality. Fine quality chemicals and materials yield excellent results.
