Most Affirmations Don't Work - How To Supercharge Yours - Part 2

In Part 1 of this article, we talked about why your average run of the mill affirmations tend to end up in the dust bin. If you've studied the Law of Attraction or The Secret, you may have heard that what you think about is what you will bring about in your reality. So you get excited about that and then write impassioned affirmations about what you want in your life. If you are like me, you diligently start repeating these every single day. For a day or two, or even a week or two, and then your subconscious starts hitting you with what seem like very valid reasons to stop it. Stuff like "These aren't working", or "This is boring", or "This is just foolish". Eventually you just stop doing them. We saw that the reasons for this were twofold:

1. Because we don't really Believe what we are telling ourselves in our affirmations, our subconscious fights back and change doesn't happen instantly, so before the affirmations have a chance to stick, we give up on them. This was covered in Part 1, and

2. We don't really know how to handle negative situations or how to put the brakes on a negative tailspin, so when we start feeling this way, we abandon our affirmations because if they were working we wouldn't feel this way, right!

It seems that it is a lot easier to get into a negative downward spiral than it is to get out of one. It seems that way anyway. I used to have a saying back in the old days before I wised up and it went like this "I've earned this depression and I'm going to wallow in it for awhile." What a ridiculous thing to say, but I really believed back then that I was actually getting something from being depressed and grumpy and nasty. The Law of Attraction states that what you think about predominantly is what you will attract back into your life. Guess what I was attracting with that attitude - yep - more of the same, a lot more of the same.

On the other hand, your true desires will come to you faster if you can focus on them with emotion and feeling. So it would stand to reason that you need to be able to recognize when you are not focusing with good emotion and feeling and be able to turn it around at the drop of a hat, if you truly want to materialize your desired outcome, doesn't it?

So knowing that, many gurus tell you that you need to CHANGE the way you think and focus on the positive, but they don't tell you HOW to do that, do they? They might recommend affirmations - we've already seen how that goes - or books to read, or meditations - great idea if you can find quiet time and space RIGHT NOW. All of these methods can help if YOU DO THEM, but it's rare to be in a negative situation that's happening right now and be able to meditate in real time.

What you need in a situation like that is a tool available that would instantly change your negative thoughts into positive ones right in the very NOW that you realize you are having them. Something that you can grab onto without having to really think about it that would be like flipping a switch off an on. Something that's already there, offering you a lifeline.

I'm sure that sounds a little crazy to some people, because we are so used to letting the circumstances of our lives dictate how we feel, and we feel powerless to anything but ride the storm out in despair. But what I am suggesting to you is that you start thinking right now, while you are reading this, how you might handle yourself the next time a crisis comes up that puts you in a tailspin. What could you say or do or picture in your mind that would turn it around. Get something stuck in your head. Something you can do on autopilot. Plant a switch there in your mind that you can reach out and flip the minute you recognize that "Oh Boy, here we go again." Maybe a picture of puppies or a chant or a little song or something that your 'Belief Detective' won't recognize as an affirmation. Song lyrics are non-threatening because you don't have to believe the words - it's just a little old song after all.

So, don't wait until the next time something blindsides you to figure out your tool might be. Think about it right NOW! Be prepared. You don't really want to go to the Pity Party anymore, so be ready.
