LASIK is a surgical procedure that helps correct poor vision. This usually will usually result in a person not needing corrective lenses anymore. The laser-assisted operation reshapes the cornea to accomplish this.

You will begin with an exam to see if you have the possibility to have the procedure. There can be reasons you can't have a LASIK surgery. One example is refraction stability. If you eyes are changing too much, LASIK is too risky.

There are other factors that might prevent you from having a surgery of this type. If you have had any eye diseases you would be concerned. Also, any eye injuries could be a consideration.

You need to do some things to prepare. If you wear contacts you need to stop using them for some time before the surgery. This is necessary because contacts affect the shape of the cornea.

The day before the procedure you need to quit using any chemicals on your body: makeup, lotions, mascara, etc. This is to control possible infections.

You will be in surgery for about thirty minutes. This is an out patient procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery.

During the surgery you will be asked to stare at a light. This is not the laser, but a light to keep your eye fixed in one spot while the laser is on. If you can't stare at a fixed object for at least one minute you might not be eligible for this surgery.

The actual surgery involves cutting and peeling back a flap of the outer skin of the eye. This exposes the part of the cornea that will be reshaped. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea to improve your vision.

When the surgery is over you will need to protect your eyes from bumping or rubbing for a few days. This is to give the flap that was created time to heal.

You won't want top do any hard contact, like boxing, for at least a month or two. Keeping chemicals out of the eyes is also important. This will help prevent infections.

Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn't see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
