In the near future, Vermont farmers will have new opportunities for agricultural diversity. A bill allowing farmers to produce industrial hemp crops became law, in spite of the fact that Governor Jim Douglas did not signed it. But those who appreciate the hemp industry still need to wait a bit longer.

Hemp and marijuana are both considered the same plant so according to Federal law, they are both illegal. Many lawmakers say that a change in this situation is inevitable. Those who wish to encourage the growing of hemp stress its significance in cosmetic, textile, and food industries. The Agriculture Agency is prepared to change even more after these new laws are passed.

Corn production in Vermont is far less than in the Midwest, totaling only 90,000 acres each year, but that does not mean that Vermont can survive without good rotation crops. Various industries support hemp as an additional Vermont crop, including candle making and dairy industries. Once considered a very small time market, products made from Hemp are quickly becoming a mainstream market. A yearly average of 16,500 acres of hemp is produced for use in consumable food products by farmers in Canada. Vermont could not only pursue this market, but could also provide hemp as cheap bedding for its significant cattle industry.

The bill was opposed by the Police Department, since hemp was considered too closely associated with marijuana. The governor states that the reason he did not sign the bill was the link between hemp and marijuana. The Agricultural Agency must now create rules regarding hemp cultivation so that farmers can obtain licenses once federal law is changed. North Dakota is the other state who has done the same. At present, Canada and many other countries are growing hemp legally. In 1937, the United States declared hemp illegal though an exception was made during World War II for industrial use.
