If you?re an avid golfer and a golf enthusiast, you?re surely drawn to any movie that is based on golf. If you?ve played golf you?re likely to critique the Hollywood-ized playing on the silver screen. Let?s face it ? it is for enjoyment. Actors always make the shot if the script calls for it so if you?re one of those nay-sayers that can?t sit back and watch a movie for pure enjoyment then don?t waste your time. If on the other hand, you?re watching golf movies simply for good laughs or inspiration then it can be just what you need.
There are several Hollywood movies about golf and they range from the inspirational to the romantic to the downright silly. It?ll really be up to you but here are some samplings of films that might perk your interests.
?Tin Cup? stars Kevin Costner and Rene Russo. Roy McAvoy (Costner) is a golf legend even though we are never told how he achieved his legendary status. He is a world class striker but he never finishes anything in life ? including golf. When he meets a psychologist (Russo) the story takes a comedic turn. McAvoy, through a series of ups and downs, ends up qualifying for the U.S. Open. This is highly unlikely for a driving range pro to make the Open but remember, this is Hollywood. The movie is entertaining and the relationship with Russo and the obstacles he faces at the Open will keep you guessing.
Another movie that mixes golf and (a bit more) romance is ?The Legend of Bagger Vance?, starring Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron. To keep her father?s course alive during the depression, Theron's character convinces Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen to play a golf match. Damon?s character is coerced into playing as well since the town wants a local golfer to compete. There are no losers in the film and it?s interesting to see the relation between Theron and Damon rekindle. Bagger Vance (Smith) helps Damon?s character find what?s important in golf and life in general.
On the other end of the scale is a silly movie that will make you laugh ? ?Happy Gilmore?. No, you may not get any inspiration but you?ll surely be entertained. Gilmore (Sandler) is a failed hockey player who, on a whim, finds he?s a natural at golf. His shots are totally ridiculous and would never work in the real world but again, this is Hollywood. It?s not supposed to be a serious movie so the zaniness of the flick is intentional.
There are several more golf movies out there. Watch them for laughs or inspiration; either way you?ll be entertained.
