Halong Bay Wants Chinese Tourists
Halong Bay, Vietnam is already a popular tourist destination, especially among visitors who come there on a Halong Bay cruise to enjoy the many sites. Recently, Halong Bay, which is located in Vietnam’s Northern Province of Quang Ninh, has launched a campaign to attract more Chinese tourists.
Recently, the directors of 11 tourism departments from southern China, as well as representatives of travel agencies and tourism service companies from both China and Vietnam, traveled to Halong Bay to talk about ways the number of tourists from China can boom.
Travel to Halong Bay has increased over the years with the many luxury cruises to Halong Bay from European companies. In recent months, thousands of visitors have arrived, thanks to packages to Halong Bay. As Vietnam’s economy grows, there can only be more visitors taking a boat into Halong Bay. And, with the booming Chinese economy, the number of these tourists is going to also be from Asia.
Currently, one ship arrives daily from southern China carrying some 700 passengers to the bay, but that number can grow and grow if the economic trends continue.
Since Halong Bay was nominated in a global online competition to be named as one of seven Natural Wonders of the World, there have been increasing numbers of tourists and more Halong Bay boats are coming to the day. For the top flight customers, there are many luxury cruises available for Halong Bay or, for the Asian customers, luxury junks that travel along Halong Bay.
According to the Quang Ninh Tourism Department, nearly 2.2 million foreign and local tourists traveled Halong Bay, in the first half of this year, up 32 percent. Of the tourists, 767,500 are from other countries, mostly China, South Korea and France.
What makes Halong Bay so popular? It’s unique geography, definitely.
The bay contains more than 1,900 limestone monolithic islands, which are stunning to look at and each is topped with thick jungle vegetation. Several of the islands contain enormous caves, which are themselves worth the visit and worth a scuba diving lesson or two. Wooden Stakes Cave is the largest grotto in the Halong area. Its three chambers contain numerous stalactites and stalagmites. There are two other big islands, Tuan Chau and Cat Ba, where there are actually inhabitants and are tourist sites in their own right, which include hotels and beaches. The smaller islands also have interesting beaches.
Many of the islands support floating villages for local fishermen, who fish for some of the more than 200 species of fish and 450 different mollusks. There are still a little fewer than 2,000 villagers who live in the area, but most of the inhabitants now cater to the tourism industry.
If it all works out with the targeted push to get more Chinese tourists, there may need to be more workers show up in Halong Bay. It can be seen that there would be a lot of traffic (especially more than one boat), which are bringing people from southern China to the bay.
