Relocating can be both an exciting and stressful time. It means choosing a new place to live, making new friends, working with new people, and learning how to get to new places. You can increase your chances of relocation being a positive experience by asking the following questions prior to buying a home.
What options for transportation will you have? What is traffic like between the home and your employment? How long will it take to get to work? Would you prefer a smaller home closer to work, or a larger, less expensive home with a long commute?
What will your neighbors be like? Are they friendly? How far away are essential places like gas stations and grocery stores? Is there a community improvement or crime prevention program in place?
If you are thinking about buying a home, are the surrounding homes more or less valuable? If they are significantly more valuable, then they could raise the appraised value of your home when you decide to sell it. (Unfortunately, the higher value may lead to higher property taxes too). Conversely, if the nearby homes are worth less than your home, they can drag its value down too.
Are there irritating noises or lights such as a streetlight coming through your bedroom window or a factory that works at night? Do you feel good about the schools your children will attend? Do they have elective classes that interest your children? Would you like to become a member of a local church congregation?
How old is your house? Is it a fixer-upper? Will you have to pay more in utilities due to inadequate insulation? Will you need to spend a lot of time keeping up the yard?
Unless you like moving often, you'll probably want to relocate to a place you can live in for as long as needed. Asking yourself the above questions can help you buy a home in the right area when going through a relocation.
