Having an accident when you are on holiday can turn the perfect getaway into a terrible nightmare, especially if you are travelling in a different country. Accidents in other countries can cause extremely high levels of anxiety and stress for travellers, and it can be difficult to know exactly what to do next. Probably the most important thing to bear in mind is not to panic, as cliché as it sounds. Be sure that nobody is injured and needs any medical attention. If everything seems to be as it should be in that area, then you simply need to take a few steps before you are back to enjoying your vacation.

Prior to your trip, it’s highly advisable that if you are planning on renting a vehicle to do any driving, make sure that you are insured, either through your private insurance company or by the rental company itself. If you opt to use your own insurance company then make sure that the minimum coverage extends to the country you are visiting. It wouldn’t be useful to be having coverage limits for Britain if you are driving in France. The next thing to do is contact emergency services for the area, and while you are waiting for them to arrive it is wise to collect the other driver’s information and insurance details. This will help expedite the information your insurer will require when you get around to contacting them. Once the emergency services arrive they will need to collect an accident statement. This documentation should be sent directly to your insurer. Just like any other police report, don’t sign it if you don’t agree with the statements made by the police officer or the other driver, but be sure to keep a copy for your records. This will help cover you in the event of any holiday complaints.

Once all of the paperwork is done, either yourself or the police can make arrangements for your car to be taken to a repair facility. When renting a vehicle, contact the renting office and they will arrange for you to receive a replacement and let you know what forms and information they will require from you to document the of the accident. While the accident itself can feel like a traumatic vacation happening, it can be handled quickly, easily and you can get back on the road in a relatively short amount of time. Don’t let a small fender bender ruin your holiday!
